Sweet Christmas Fruits – Fruit Bread in a Jar

Vary the dried fruits to add flavour to the fruit bread in a jar

Lastly, add the dried fruits to the jar one by one

The ingredients for the fruit bread in a jar only cost a few dollars. You need a 1 litre jar. Curved Weck jars look particularly nice – at amazon*, for example, there is a large selection of different preserving jars in various sizes and shapes.

Mix ingredients and design jar: 20 minutes

Design jar and tag

Most canning jars look lovely as it is and I created mine using just a fabric ribbon border, bakers twine and a Christmas outline sticker. I printed out the tag, cut it out and glued it onto gold card. I left about 0.5 cm of border and cut it out with serrated contour scissors. Then just write the Personal Message inside, fold it and punch a small hole with the hole punch and tie it around the canning jar.

How to Make the Fruit Bread in a Jar

One by one, roughly chop the apricots, dates, blueberries and mango pieces. Put each ingredient in a separate bowl.

Weigh out the flour, mix with the yeast and pour into the jar. Layer the brown sugar on top and sprinkle with the pinch of salt. Add the dried fruit one after the other.

It is best to use a funnel to layer the ingredients one by one in the jar. So that the layers (especially the flour) do not “sag” afterwards and lie nicely, tap the glass on the table a few times after each layer. This compacts the respective ingredient.

It looks particularly nice when the layers contrast in colour. To prevent them from mixing, the glass must be filled to the top. Depending on how voluminous your chosen dried fruit is, you may need 1.5 litres of glass. Simply crumple up some greaseproof paper and use it to compactly fill the remaining space. Only close the jar when it is completely filled to the brim.

Recipe for 1 jar with 1 – 1.5 l capacity

  • 500 g spelt flour
  • 1 packet dry yeast
  • 75 g brown sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 60 g dried apricots
  • 30 g dried blueberries
  • 60 g dried mango
  • 30 g dried dates

Add fresh when cooking

  • 150 ml milk
  • 80 g butter
  • Butter for greasing
  • 2 egg yolks

Add fresh: 150 ml milk, 80 g butter, 2 egg yolks and butter to grease the tin.

How to do it: Heat the milk and butter. Knead the baking mix, egg yolk and milk-butter mix well. Cover and let the dough rise for one hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C convection oven. Knead the dough again and shape into two balls. Brush with butter and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake for about 40 minutes until the fruit loaf is golden. Enjoy your meal!

Goal and baking time: 1 h 40 min

Preparation: 20 min

Each baking mix can be personally adapted to taste – in the case of the fruit bread baking mix in a jar, for example, you can change the composition of the dried fruit.

In addition to baking mixes in jars, cooking mixes have also conquered the hearts of kitchen fairies in recent years. Whether savoury or sweet, a homemade culinary greeting from the kitchen is super practical, delicious and a nice gift for Christmas, a birthday or a present.
