This year you’re celebrating a lavish New Year’s Eve party at home? Here’s what you need to know and how to make the party unforgettable for your guests!
The year is coming to an end, a new one is already beckoning around the corner and this is an occasion to really let it rip. Many New Year’s Eve parties are booked up weeks, if not months in advance, at huge public events like at the Brandenburg Gate you can celebrate with the masses or simply throw your own New Year’s Eve party at home.
The advantages of a self-organised New Year’s Eve party at home are obvious: you decide who celebrates with you, you have control over the music and decorations and you can simply take over the direction and design the party according to your ideas. And for the preparation and the cleaning up afterwards, of course, you look for a few helpers among your friends and family… 😉
You just want to know how to make your New Year’s Eve party at home the hit of the year? Then just read on!

It’s important to let everyone know in advance, especially those friends you really want to have at your New Year’s Eve party at home. It’s best to write a guest list and see how many people you can get.
You should also decide: will it be a small party or can the guests also bring other friends?
Now it’s time to write the invitations. Of course, the best way is to send analogue invitations by post, preferably personalised, but above all with a personal, appealing text. Please also ask them to let you know by a certain date (e.g. 30.12.) if they are coming, if and how many they are bringing and, if applicable, what they are contributing to the buffet.
We love themed parties and New Year’s Eve is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up and celebrate the turn of the year with a cool theme. However, you should only choose a theme like beach party for your New Year’s Eve party at home if you really do plan to temporarily fill your living room with sand and you definitely don’t plan to leave the house in your summer party outfit.
Beautiful themes suitable for New Year’s Eve are, for example, 20s, Venetian masked ball or persons of this year. At Abenteuer Freundschaft you will find many articles with ideas and tips for all kinds of theme parties!
If you decide on a theme, the decorations at your New Year’s Eve party at home should of course reflect it. Otherwise, classic New Year’s Eve decorations are the order of the day: garlands, streamers, confetti, glitter palms, tinsel left over from Christmas, balloons and ultra-cute party hats… 😉
If your New Year’s Eve party is at home with a small group, I can recommend fondue or raclette as two super cosy and communal New Year’s Eve meals. Here are tips for everything you need for a successful raclette evening. However, if you have more than 10 or 12 people, the table will be crowded and it will be difficult with only one fondue pot or raclette grill.
An alternative that always works is to simply serve a large buffet. Either the guests contribute something, in which case you should find out in advance what it is so that you don’t end up with 5 pasta salads but not a piece of bread. Or simply provide a wide range of appetisers, salads, snacks and treats yourself.
Always good as an ace up your sleeve: a large pot of ready-made chilli in the fridge that can be heated up late at night as a midnight snack. Because partying makes you hungry 😉
And drinks? Of course, enough sparkling wine, a big bowl of punch, ingredients for mixing cocktails, beer and… especially important: enough non-alcoholic drinks!

To get your New Year’s Eve party going at home, you can also have a little New Year’s Eve karaoke. Prepare instrumental versions of some popular songs and let your friends interpret them. To make the karaoke more New Year’s Eve-oriented, you can also use only songs from this year.
Tip: Many songs can be found in a karaoke version, i.e. instrumental and with inserted lyrics, on YouTube.
Another cool programme item at a New Year’s Eve party at home is a little annual quiz. Google a bit or watch one of the year in review shows on TV and take notes. Write about 10-15 questions that you can know, but that are not too easy.
Maybe you can think of 3 wrong answers for each question, then you can do the quiz in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire style. Whoever gets the most answers right will be rewarded with a super special New Year’s Eve cocktail 😉
If there’s one typical German New Year’s Eve ritual, it’s watching Dinner for One. Stunning but true: neither in the UK nor anywhere else outside Germany is this gem of television entertainment known, let alone watched on New Year’s Eve!
If you feel your guests could be a little more boisterous, we recommend playing Dinner for One as a drinking game with them. Of course, there’s always drinking when Freddy the butler drinks and when he trips over the tiger skin! If you haven’t had one in your crown yet… Well, well!
Unlike Miss Sophie’s 90th birthday, which only the Germans celebrate year after year, people all over the world feel the urge to look into the future at the turn of the year. The best-known and most traditional way to do this is by pouring lead. But if you want to try out a different New Year’s Eve oracle with your guests for a change: on 29 December, an article on New Year’s Eve oracles will appear on Abenteuer Freundschaft!
Another popular programme item at private New Year’s Eve parties are classic party games such as pantomime, Taboo, Activity for adults, Who am I? or Meiern aka Mäxle. It’s best to think about a few alternatives beforehand and just go by the mood of your guests, the rest will work itself out.
You can create a special party highlight with a special surprise that you conjure up shortly before or shortly after midnight. This could be a champagne pyramid, your own personal fireworks, exquisite deluxe cocktails, a huge ice-cream cake or even a confetti cannon (if you trust your hoover to clear your living room of them later ;-).
It doesn’t matter if you really party the night away or if you only meet again the next morning…. cough… a New Year’s breakfast with your guests, or at least some of them, is a wonderful way to end a lively celebration.
To enjoy a relaxed New Year’s morning, prepare as much as you can the day before, e.g. ready-made cold meats and cheese platters in the fridge, rolls and croissants to bake up, etc.
We wish you a lot of fun at your New Year’s Eve party at home and a happy new year! 🙂

Fruity, sweet, tart and deliciously drinkable. The best that came out of the cocktail shaker over the year.
At the court of Versailles, magical oracles, a fortune teller and a crazy card game await you. What does your future hold?
