Spring is here! Does looking out of the window make you want to do something because the sun is smiling at you? Now is the perfect time for spring activities with your friends. That’s why we have 10 spring tips for activities that you’ll love!

1. Pack Your Swimming Trunks!

With spring, the long-awaited bathing season also begins. Whether in the open-air swimming pool or at a beautiful bathing lake: nothing refreshes more on hot days than a jump into the water. We prefer natural bathing spots such as lakes or rivers. However, these should have sufficiently clean water quality: So check beforehand on the internet or with your city council to find out in which waters in your area it is safe to swim. If you live near the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, you have the luxury of being able to swim in the sea. However, you should take into account any storm warnings and markings on the beach. If everything fits, you and your friends can already start enjoying the bathing fun.

Checklist for Swimming:

Basics:

  • Swimming trunks / bikini
  • Towel
  • Bathing slippers
  • Picnic blanket
  • Sun cream
  • Sunglasses

For even more bathing fun:

  • Inflatable ball / beach volleyball
  • Inflatable rubber boat*
  • Air mattress
  • Diving goggles
  • Snorkel
  • Diving fins

2. Take a Boat Trip

Not only can you swim in waters, you can also sail them. Take your friends or family on a boat trip through your hometown or on a nearby lake. This way you can discover your home area together from a whole new perspective! Whether on the Spree or the Wannsee in Berlin, the Alster or Elbe in Hamburg, the Rhine in Cologne, on the Starnberger See near Munich or on the Main through Frankfurt: a boat trip with friends is always an exceptional experience and one of the must do spring tips.

And spring is just the right time for it, because it’s neither too cold nor too warm and nature is in full bloom! If you prefer to take the oars in your own hands, you can of course rent a rowing boat or canoe or go on a sailing trip. There are also offers for this throughout Germany, whether on the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, Lake Constance or Lake Chiemsee.

3. Spring tips for Explorers – Discover New Sights

Springtime is excursion time! You probably have no idea how many great sights there are in your area that you didn’t know about or have never seen. Now is the right time for you and your friends to discover them. The cold season is over and the spring sun makes history shine in a new light, whether you visit one of the many great medieval castles on the Rhine, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, the Bastei in Saxon Switzerland or Neuschwanstein Castle.

4. Enjoy the Blossoms

“Everything is new in May” is not said for nothing: flowers and trees are in bloom everywhere and the greenery is fresher than ever! The ideal time of year for a visit to the botanical gardens or a garden show! Where else can you see so many flowers in all their glory? To make sure you don’t get bored, take a look at here for our tips on how to turn a trip to the botanical garden into a fun challenge!

5. Take a Bike Ride Into the Countryside

If you live in the countryside anyway or just want to get out of the city for a change: take a bike ride into the countryside with your mates. Cycling keeps you fit and is guaranteed to put you in a good mood when you ride through nature with your friends and the spring wind blows around your ears. Very important: make sure you take enough to drink, because cycling is incredibly healthy, but it also makes you sweat and thirsty! And if it’s going to be a longer bike ride, pack provisions for a picnic. To keep food and drinks cool, we always pack them in a small cooler bag* for the bike, which you can easily attach to the handlebars. Of course, a bike tour can also be combined with other spring tips from this list, for example a visit to a bathing lake or a castle ruin in the forest.

6. Go On a Photo Safari Together

You and your friends are into creative activities as spring tips? Go on a photo safari, whether in the city or in nature: In spring, you’ll find charming photo motifs just about everywhere. Tip: It’s best to decide on a theme or a task beforehand so that your photo safari becomes a playful competition at the same time. For example, take pictures of the most beautiful blossoms, birds’ nests or trees. Or you can go on a photo safari through the city: who will take the best pictures of front gardens, balconies, fountains, roller skaters or ice cream parlours? You can also leave the theme open and surprise each other with the most exciting motifs, the most unusual perspectives and the funniest picture compositions!

Although almost everyone has a smartphone and shoots their photos with it, in our experience a real photo safari is most fun with a classic camera. For real hobby photographers, we highly recommend using a digital single-lens reflex camera, or DSLR for short. The pictures will be simply great with it! We use the Canon EOS 700D, which is also the test winner on the consumer portal testsiege.net. The winner in the best price-performance ratio is the Nikon D 3200 SLR digital camera. If a DSLR camera is beyond your budget, we can also recommend the much cheaper Canon IXUS 170. The advantage of this camera: it is so small and handy that it fits comfortably in your pocket and still delivers extremely high quality images.

7. Spring in the City Park

You want to enjoy spring but don’t want to go too far? No problem: lie down in the nearest public park, relax and let the sun shine on your belly. But for the more active, a city park is also the perfect place for fun in spring. Bring badminton rackets, frisbees or a football and let yourself go. If you’re exhausted but still want to spend some time in the park, you can play a card game like Uno, Phase 10 or Dobble.

8. Climb Through the Air

For the sporty among you, the beginning of spring is a real blessing: finally jogging again without freezing, cycling, skating or simply exercising in the fresh air. Why don’t you use your new-found energy for original excursions with action. Try climbing together, for example, because the climbing season has now begun. Everywhere in Germany there are climbing parks and high ropes courses, which offer climbing fun in all difficulty levels and also climbing courses.

9. Spring Freshness at the Weekly Market

If you and your clique are into fresh and healthy locally grown food, spring is made for you! Why not meet up for a stroll together at a weekly market near you and explore the wide selection of seasonal produce. Typical spring vegetables that are now available fresh from local cultivation include: Cauliflower, kohlrabi, spring onions, chard, carrots, radishes, asparagus, pointed cabbage and savoy cabbage, rocket and lettuce.
As far as fruit is concerned, fresh strawberries are now the most taste-explosive gift of spring in May. From June onwards, blueberries, currants, raspberries, gooseberries and cherries are also available. And after shopping at the weekly market, you can use the ingredients right away and conjure up delicious dishes with friends.

10. Celebrate Spring

From time immemorial, people have celebrated the rebirth of the year in spring, the blossoming of nature and the rising of the seeds after the long winter. Such spring festivals exist and existed in every culture: the Celts celebrated Beltane, our present-day Walpurgis Night, in Iran they still celebrate the ancient Persian spring festival Nouruz, the Indians celebrate Holi in spring, the Fest of Colours and the Japanese Hanami, the festival of cherry blossom.

In our country, some of the old Germanic customs have been preserved in the Christian Easter festival, but there are also spring festivals such as the traditional May festival, which no longer have any religious character and simply express the joy of the beginning of spring. If there is a spring festival near you, take the chance and join in the celebrations! Or if you are lucky enough to have your own garden, host your own spring party, your friends will thank you for it! By the way, you can find some advice to make your party a guaranteed success here.
