Piquet Card Game: The Game Rules

  • Players: 2
  • Accessories: 1 Skat hand (32 cards)
  • Skills required: Tactics, luck
  • Duration: Approx. 45 min.
  • Place: Anywhere

Piquet is a classic French card game that has been enthusiastically played since the 16th century. In Germany, it was long also known under the funny name Rummelpikett. Traditionally, it is a card game for two players and is considered one of the most challenging card games for 2 players..

As with many card games with a long tradition, Piquet has established several variants. The following explanation of the Piquet rules is based on Meyers Conversation Enziclopedia from 1888.

Piquet – Opening

Piquet is a card game for 2 players that is played in the original with a Skat hand, so 32 hands of French playing cards. However, it also works with German cards. The cards have the following values: the ace counts as 11, the pictures as 10 and all other cards according to the number of points they show. The trick order is similar to most trick plays (except Skat):

Ace – King – Queen – Jack -10 – 9 – 8 – 7, however, there are no trumps in the piquet.

First you draw who is the first dealer. This shuffles the cards and deals both players 12 cards each. The remaining 8 cards are placed as a stack, Talon in the jargon, in the middle. A special feature of the piquet: the top 5 cards are placed across the bottom 3, so that a cross is created..

The so-called forehand, that is, the player who is not the dealer, may now put aside 3 to 5 of his cards face down, which seem to him the least useful. To do this, he draws the corresponding number of cards from the deck. After that, the dealer may put away cards, his number of cards depends on how many the forehand has left on the talon.

Example: If the first player has put aside 5 cards, the 2nd player can only put away 3. However, if the 1st player put away only 3 cards, the 2nd player can sort out 3, 4 or 5 cards..

Special feature: cartes blanches

If one of the players does not have a card of value 10 or higher before exchanging his cards, he can immediately announce Cartes blanches and receives ten points credited for it. However, he must then also show his cards to the other player. In the British variant of Piquet, a player also has Cartes blanches if he has no picture, i.e. no Jack, no Queen and no King, but does have 10s and/or Aces in his hand. Cartes blanches must be announced in any case before trading cards..

Piquet – Evaluation

Now the two players evaluate their cards in 3 different categories and try to outbid the other. The 3 rating categories are:

  • the point
  • the sequences
  • the set

Point

In piquet, the suit of which a player holds the most cards in his hand is called Rummel.

With this Piquet card game, heart is trump

In this piquet hand, Heart is the pointPoint is called the suit of which the player has the most cards in his hand, i.e. ♣ Cross, ♠ Spades, ♥ Heart or ♦ Charles. The forehand, in the following player A, announces the highest number of cards of a suit, but at least 4. If player A has 3 cards of each suit, he cannot make a valid announcement. Player B responds with ”Good”, ‘‘Not good” or ”Does how much?”, depending on whether he holds fewer, more or the same number of rummy cards..

If a player has more cards of the point suit than the other, he receives this number squared credited as points, i.e. 16, 25, 36, 49 or 64. The question ”Makes how much?”, indicates that player B holds the same number of point cards. In this case, both players add up the card values of their hype to determine who gets the points. If there is also a tie, no player gets points..

Sequences

Sequences of consecutive cards of the same suit are called sequences in the piquet card game.

Piquet sequences: A heart of spades and a fifth of diamonds

Piquet-Sequenzen: Eine Pik-Terz und eine Karo-QuinteA sequence in piquet is any series of at least 3 consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g. ♣-9, ♣-10, ♣-Jack. In this case, it is a third, which accordingly counts 3 points – points in the technical jargon. Depending on the number of cards, this is then called a fourth (4 points), fifth (15 (!) points), sixth (16 points), seventh (17 points), or octave (18 points) in ascending order. As you can see, starting with a fifth, 10 extra points are added to the number of cards.

Following the same pattern, the forehand now states its longest sequence and the hindhand responds with ”Good”, ”Not good”, or ”How high?”. You ask the last question only if the sequence length is the same. This time, it’s not the sum of the card values that matters, but the highest card in the sequence. If this is the same, neither gets a point. But whoever has the longer sequence or, in the case of sequences of the same length, the higher card, may be credited with the corresponding number of points for this, as well as for further sequences if he has such cards in his hand.

Set

In piquet, 3 or 4 cards of equal value are called tricks.

Piquet tricks: A queen’s peddle and a ten’s foursome

Piquet card game sets: A queen’s three of a kind and a ten of a kindA set is the presence of 3 or 4 cards of the same value, provided that the value is between 10 and the ace, so 7s, 8s and 9s do not count! This is called a Gedritt (3 points) or a Geviert (14 points). The scoring follows the same pattern, where a four of a kind always beats a three of a kind, and the higher card value wins. The player who holds the more valuable set in his hand may credit himself the points for it as well as for his other sets.

Carte rouge

For scoring purposes, the same cards can appear in both the carnival, the sequence, and the feat! Kommt jede der 12 Karten eines Spielers bei der Bewertung in den Kategorien erfolgreich zum Einsatz, kann er Carte rouge deklarieren und erhält sofort 20 Points extra.

Repique und Pique

If a player scores 30 points or more in the scoring phase before the other player has scored a point, he is awarded a repique and may add 60 points. If one of the players reaches or exceeds the 30 point mark only during the trick play and the other player has not yet made any points, he has a pique and receives 30 additional points.

Piquet – Stitch Phase

When playing piquet, different rules apply than usual.

Whoever plays the trick in piquet gets the point

After announcing the points, the forehand plays out. In piquet, you must always serve the played color as long as you have it. In piquet, players receive one Point for each card played, i.e., each opening of a set. If the opponent wins this trick, he also receives a Point and may play the next set.

Whoever takes the last set of a round receives 3 Points for it. So it is attractive to play in such a way that you win this one. Who has made the higher number of tricks, receives for it additionally 10 Points. If both players have made 6 tricks each, i.e. the same number of tricks, these 10 points are not awarded in this round. However, by agreement of the players, they can be credited in the next round to the player who makes the most sets. This player then receives 20 extra points. If one makes all tricks (Capot or Vole), he receives even 30 Extra-Points..

Playing and evaluation at the Piquet

A piquet game either lasts 6 rounds, or ends when one of the players has scored over 100 points. Before the game starts, you agree on one of these variants.
Playing nafter rounds, determine the final score of the winner according to the following principle: .

a) If both players have more than 100 points, the winner receives:.

Winner points – loser points + 100.

b) However, if the loser has less than 100 points, he has not exceeded the rubicon and the winner gets:

Winner points + loser points + 100.

This also applies if the winner himself also has less than 100 points. If after 6 rounds both players actually have the same number of points, two more rounds follow (so that everyone is once forehand). If there is then still a tie, the game is considered a draw..
