A recommended set-up for the kiddie pool party is to unpack the presents first, then do some crafts (or play games) with the grown-ups to match the party, then there is a big game highlight such as a water pinata, the water Olympics or the exam to become a state-approved mermaid or merman or alternative 2-3 small games, then something small is eaten for lunch or the birthday cake is cut and then splashing around in the pool.
You should ask yourself one important question right at the beginning: Will the kiddie pool party have a special theme? If your daughter is an enthusiastic little mermaid or your son is a fan of diving, then pick the theme and make it the motto for the entire pool party!

1. What Do I Need for a Kiddie Pool Party?
What, when, where and above all how: The W-questions are always at the beginning of the party planning. Sit back and relax in your deck chair and think about when and where the children’s birthday party will take place, what the programme should be and what is needed for it.
- Where will the party take place? In the indoor pool, in the garden, on the beach or at the lake?
- Do I need more parents as supervisors?
- When does the kiddie pool party take place?
- How much time do I have for the programme?
- Which programme should take place? Several small games and small handicrafts or a big Olympiad or exam?
- What accessories do I need for games and craft projects?

2. Kiddie Pool Party Invitation
Craft the invitations together with your child. This is a lot of fun – especially if the pool party invitation is something very special.
- The swimming ring or beach ball invitation: Get a swimming ring or beach ball for each child invited, blow them up and write the text of the invitation on them.
- Bottle mail invitation: If you’re planning a treasure hunt or a pirate party, this invitation is perfect. Write the invitation text on a piece of paper, roll it up, wrap a silk ribbon around it and seal the ends with sealing wax.
- Water animal invitation: For small children, a touch game is a great game (see 4. for a nice game with instructions). You can design the invitation to match. Cut out circles from blue clay paper, draw waves on them and stick a plastic water animal in the middle. You can also stamp other water animals and motifs to match the party theme. Write the text on the back.

3. Deco for the Kiddie Pool Party
The decoration should above all create a party atmosphere, after all it is a special children’s birthday party! Decorate the table to match the theme with plates in the shape of pineapples or shells, balloons with flowers and matching garlands that convey an exotic holiday feeling. Or can you go with the ocean theme and keep everything blue with shark, whale and mermaid motifs?

4. Water Piñata
Piñatas actually come from Latin America and are colourful papier-mache figures that are smashed. In the meantime, this actually traditional game is also very popular here at children’s birthday parties and celebrations.
For our kiddie pool party, we have a special variant: instead of smashing a piñata, you tie many balloons filled with water and some shrink-wrapped sweets to a rope at equal intervals. Hang the rope tautly above the children’s heads. Now they get sticks and are allowed to jump and hit the balloons to their heart’s content until they burst. Great fun!
5. State-certified Mermaids and Aquamen
The big test to become a state-approved mermaid or merman consists of 4 small games that are all played together and are suitable for young children from the age of 4. At the end, each child receives a medal.
- Test: Dive in the pool for submerged objects and blindfolded one after the other with the help of the others (right! left!) retrieve a certain object, which you call as soon as the child is blindfolded.
- Examination: Shooting cans with water spray guns.
- Test: Water bomb fight – children against adults. It is particularly funny for older children if the adult(s) dress up as the “enemy”, for example, surprisingly as a shark and guard the water bomb store. For this, you can simply tie on a shark fin and don’t have to slip into a full-body costume. 🙂
- Test: Pose as a mermaid with mermaid tail and an aquarius with trident pose in the pool and perform a beautiful feat that you photograph as a keepsake. Preferably with a Polaroid camera, then each child can take their photo home with them.
6. The Great Water Olympics
The big water Olympics is a nice main programme item for children from 6 years onwards: everyone is allowed to show their talent! However, the prerequisite is that a real pool is available and not just a small paddling pool. The Water Olympics are great for a pool party at the swimming pool – the children can jump in without any danger.
Beforehand, each athlete decides on a discipline or figure and announces it loudly. Now everyone trains their discipline.
Then it starts, the first athlete announces their discipline and performs it to a jury (adult chaperones, parents and siblings). The jury announces a score out loud from 1-10, which is decided together. Finally, there is an award ceremony for the first three places with medals.
