From burst eggs to the risk of salmonella: when it comes to how to blow out an egg, you should definitely take these tips to heart. It’s easy and safe!

The most beautiful Easter decoration is homemade – and traditionally, beautiful, self-designed, dyed and painted eggs belong on the Easter bouquet or in the Easter nest. And so that you can use the eggs again next year, what’s inside has to come out of the egg. Only when all the residue has been removed should you paint, glue and decorate the blown-out Easter eggs to your heart’s content.

If you don’t know how to do it, blowing out Easter eggs can turn into a real chore: the egg yolk doesn’t come out, the egg bursts between your fingers and then there is the risk of salmonella from raw eggs. That’s why it’s important to take a few tips to heart how to blow out an egg to be completely safe.

Tip: Don’t throw away the egg mixture! After blowing out the eggs, you can bake a delicious omelette, pancake or waffle. The blown-out egg yolks and egg whites can still be stored in the fridge in a closed container for up to a maximum of 3 days.

How to Blow Out an Egg and What You Should Know

What You Need*

  • Raw eggs
  • Needle
  • Straw or Blasfix, alternatively disposable syringe
  • 1 metal skewer
  • 1 toilet roll
  • 2 bowls (one for yolks & whites and one for water)
  • Empty egg carton for storage

How to Blow Out an Egg

This is how to blow out an egg

Prick the egg with a needle on both sides

  1. First wash the Easter eggs with dishwashing liquid and water.
  2. You can easily remove the expiry date printed on the eggs with vinegar.
  3. Cut a toilet roll into 4 roughly equal parts. You can place the egg in one of these holders to hold it in place and poke a hole in each side of the egg with a needle. Carefully enlarge the hole on the round underside of the egg with the needle until it is about 0.5 cm in diameter.
  4. Now hold the egg over a bowl so that the larger hole faces the bowl and push a piece of straw (or a blowfix) to the small hole and blow until the egg white and yolk flow into the bowl. You can get a blowfix at Easter time in craft shops, drugstores or online e.g. at amazon*. You can also push a disposable syringe filled with air into the lock to blow out the egg.
  5. If you don’t want the yolk to come out, poke it with a metal skewer and mix the yolk and egg white. But be careful, otherwise the egg will break faster than you think!
  6. Be sure to blow out the egg as best you can, so that no residue is left behind, which will start to go mouldy and smelly.
  7. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid or vinegar and rinse the egg until it is completely clean inside. To do this, immerse the egg completely, let it fill up, cover both holes and shake it. This sounds easier than it is, because blown-out eggs do not fill up immediately. You can help by sucking out the air with a straw while pressing the egg under water. Then carefully blow the water out through the holes. Repeat this 2-3 times.
  8. Shake out the egg and place it in the loo roll holder to dry out.

What to Look Out for When Blowing Out Easter Eggs?

Raw eggs can transmit salmonella – that is why you should not blow out Easter eggs directly with your mouth but always use a straw or a blowfix. What many people don’t know is that the first place to be infected with salmonella is the shell of an egg – so you should avoid touching it with your lips and wash it well before blowing it out!

You should also use very fresh eggs, preferably fresh from an organic farmer, and make sure that the shell of the egg is whole. If the shell is damaged, bacteria can get inside.

Wash your hands thoroughly after blowing out the egg. And wipe the work surface well as well as wash the shish kebab, the needle and all the tools used.

And then you can start painting :-).
