What colours are: The Hogwarts Express? The flag of Antarctica? All kinds of pepper? In the Color Brain game, all the answers are already at your fingertips. But showing your colours has to be learned!
Color Brain is a quiz game of a somewhat different kind, because all the answers are basically already given: they are one or more colours. And you also hold them as cards in your hand. To name the colours of objects correctly – that sounds really easy. At first you might be surprised by the age rating: the game is recommended for ages 12 and up.
But once you have played the Color Brain game, you quickly realise that some of the questions are quite tricky and the knowledge of colours is more versatile than you first thought.
Do you want to know why Trivial Pursuit is no longer on our table? There are now such great new quiz games as the pub quiz, kNOW with almighty google knowledge, Who-knows-that?!? to guess fellow players or Sound Jack, where the quizmaster talks to us in a real audio quiz – that’s where the classic ends up in the basement.
Note on transparency: We found the game surprisingly in the post one day – Carletto AG had kindly sent us a copy of their own accord. This review is unpaid and reflects our own independent opinion.
First you form teams, 2-4 teams are possible, although a team can also consist of only one player. Each team now receives 12 answer cards, 11 of which represent a specific colour and one a colour copier. The latter card functions similarly to a joker.
There are 2 decks of question cards, which are not shuffled but played in a fixed order. There is a practical cardboard slipcase with a viewing window in which you can read the question. Only when you pull out the card does the answer appear.
Color Brain contains 150 question cards
Any player starts the game by reading aloud the first question and the number of colours asked. This is because many questions ask for several colours at once. Each player or team now decides which colours to choose and places the corresponding colour cards face down in front of them. There is no time limit.
Once everyone has discarded, the cards are turned over and the question card is taken out of the box to check the correct answer. The card is now put back into the box as the last card.
A question is only considered to have been answered correctly if the correct number of colours and the correct colours are on display. If this is not the case, the team gets 0 points.
Each team that knew the correct answer gets 1 point for each wrong answer given by another team.
If all teams have given the correct answer, no one gets points for the time being and the card is placed face up in the middle of the table (“in the pot”). All teams that have answered the next question correctly then get an additional point and the pot card is put into the deck. If everyone answers correctly several times in a row, several pot cards with correspondingly many extra points can accumulate. However, if all players / teams get it wrong in one round, all cards in the pot are forfeited.
The winner is the team that has 15 points first. If there is a tie, there are several winners who may share the title of “Colour Brain”.
Each team has exactly 1 opportunity per game to use their colour copier card. This is placed instead of one of the colour cards to be laid if you are unsure of the or a colour. After everyone has turned over the cards, but before the correct answer is looked up, the team may now compare the answers of the other teams on the table and replace the colour copier card with a colour card like the other teams have on the table (but no other!).
The colour copier card is then used up and returned to the game box. Exception: all teams have placed the colour copier card in one round. In this case, all teams score 0 points, but may take the colour copier card back into their hands.
Each team holds these colour cards in their hands
The game idea of a quiz with colours is simple, but also quite ingenious. It’s one of those ideas where you intuitively wonder why someone hasn’t thought of it before. The game material and the box are also attractively designed. The price of currently € 18.10 is okay. Most importantly, Color Brain is definitely fun!
The rules are very simple, so you can play straight away. The game is fun for both younger and adults and is suitable as a family game as well as a party game. Once you are into it, you quickly play several rounds in a row.
It is a pity that there are only 150 question cards, because they are used up faster than you think. But maybe one day the publisher will offer replenishment decks?
For everyone who likes quizzes and appreciates an innovative idea: The answer to everything is colours!
An innovative party quiz that’s all about knowing the right colour(s) of things. Something completely different from other quiz games!
